Skyhawks Cadet Squadron 47 Wins at National Cadet Competition!

Members of the team with CAP National Commander, Maj Gen Richard L. Bowling, and the Assistant Secretary of the Air Force, Manpower and Reserve Affairs, Mr. Michael L. Dominguez.

OCEANSIDE, CA 30 July 2003-- The Skyhawks Cadet Squadron 47 made California Wing and Pacific Region  proud when its members won first place in the National Color Guard Competition held 25-29 June in Dayton, Ohio -- the birthplace of aviation.

The National Cadet Competition [NCC] is an annual program to evaluate the best team of cadets represented at wing, region and national levels for drill teams and color guards. The NCC enables cadets to model traits of the highest standards of leadership and personal responsibility. The NCC encompasses the National Drill Team Competition [NDTC] and the National Color Guard Competition [NCGC]. Teams come from the eight CAP regions across America to compete to win the United States Air Force Chief of Staff Sweepstakes Trophy (given to the first place NDTC and NCGC winners), as well as other top awards.

The members of the winning Squadron 47 color guard team:

C/SMsgt Laura Borenstein, CG Commander
C/MSgt Wade Wright, Junior Flagbearer
C/SrA Kenneth Beach, Senior Guard
C/SrA Nicole Kim, Junior Guard
C/SSGT Eric Perry, Alternate

Scoring was as follows:

Indoor Practical Drill:  1st Place
In Ranks Inspection:  1st Place
Standard Drill:  2nd Place

Outdoor Practical Drill:  2nd Place
Mile Run: 2nd Place

Female Fleet Foot Award:  C/SMSgt Laura Borenstein, 6:05

The National Color Guard Competition consisted of:

1.  In-Ranks Inspection -- Reporting in/out, proper wear of the uniform, cleanliness and neatness of uniform and equipment, grooming standards, military bearing, and overall appearance of the team.

2.  Standard Drill -- This event covers the standard drill movements required of a color guard

3.  Indoor Practical Drill -- This event seeks to evaluate the color guard team’s ability to quickly assess a room setting, develop a plan, and present and retire the colors professionally. Because the concept of this competition is based upon no prior knowledge of the room, the room will not be available for preview by the team or spectators at any time before the event.

4.  Outdoor Practical Drill -- One of a color guard’s primary responsibilities is to raise and lower the flag at the beginning and end of the duty day. This event will evaluate each color guard team’s ability to perform this duty while rendering appropriate honor and dignity to the flag.

5.  Written Examination -- Consists of 50 multiple-choice questions selected to test knowledge in the following areas: Leadership requirements in Phases I and II of the cadet program; General knowledge of the Civil Air Patrol corporation, including history, mission, and organizational structure; Color guard movements and procedures from the CAP Drill and Ceremonies Manual; General knowledge of CAPR 900-2, CAPM 39-1, and CAPR 52-18; and the Manual of Arms.

6.  Timed Mile Run

7.  Aerospace Education Project

Our sincere congratulations go to all the members of Squadron 47, South Coast Group 7, California Wing, and Pacific Region that made this success possible.
