Spring 2003

The California Wing Cadet Programs conference was a resounding success. With over 300 members participating in seminars and classes ranging from Emergency Services, Etiquette, Flight Simulators and Radio (ACUT) classes to Model Rocketry and the USAF Academy.

First Place for the CAWG Cadet Color Guard Competition was awarded to Skyhawks Squadron 47.

The Commander of the 2003 Cadet Training Group is C/LTC Gavin Woodman

The highlight of the weekend was the presentation of the General Carl A Spaatz Award to Cadet Colonel Allison D. Thompson (more info).

A tremendous thanks to those that planned and conducted the conference.

As you know, 1 April 2003 marked several changes in the structure of the CAP Cadet Program. The most questions are regarding the new grade structure. The simplest way to determine your proper grade is first to determine what achievement you have completed. Then look at the chart in the new CAPR52-16 and see what grade matches that achievement. That is the grade your squadron commander should pin on your collar. If you have more questions (that cannot be answered by your squadron commander), email me and I will research the answer.

The CAWG Cadet Advisory Council is being rejuvenated and wants YOUR input on how the cadet program should work. Do you have ideas that would make your cadet career better? Then get involved with your squadron and group CACs.

Lot's of activities are in the works . . .

Fall Cadet Non-Commissioned Officers' School (NCOS) will be held in Northern California 7-9 November, Southern California 14-16 November. Locations and other details will follow.

Integrated Aerospace Education Program - ** New! **

The Cadet Section is working alongside the AE Section to implement IAEP. It will be a series of weekend Aerospace Education courses that will review the cadet aerospace books, as well as include one or more aerospace activities. These courses should be of great help to those squadrons without "Aerospace Education Gurus" and should help those cadets struggling to pass the AE written tests.

Encampment

Lieutenant Colonel Tony Upton is the Commander of the 2003 Cadet Encampment. Because Camp SLO is, again, only available the last week of August (a horrible week for most school schedules), encampment will be held at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton near San Diego. .

Ground Search and Rescue School

GSAR is back. Learn about the latest search and rescue techniques and all about mission ground team operations. Lt Col Rick Decastro is the Commandant of this school. We are looking to have this course concurrently alongside encampment at Camp Pendleton.

Cadet Survival Training School -- "Learn to Return"

No pizza this week! CSTS is back and will be run by Lt Col Elizabeth Blackey. Learn how to use a minimum amount of supplies to make it through harsh conditions. 90% of survival is mental.

Training Leaders of Cadets

The former CAWG Cadet Leaders' Program has been revised by National Headquarters. This weekend course, for senior members, will cover the important aspects of running the Civil Air Patrol Cadet Program at the squadron level. This course will be held concurrently with at least one senior member Squadron Leadership School or senior member Corporate Learning Course in Northern and Southern California in 2003.

I look forward to seeing you at future squadron, group and wing activities!
